During her time in college P.E.R.K. Consulting president, Andrena Sawyer, saw firsthand how easy it was for deserving students to lose out on good opportunities because of the lack of resources for international students. The NextGen Scholarship Fund was created for international students and non-citizens who come to the United States with hopes of obtaining higher education to create a better life for themselves and their families. It is a local (Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia) scholarship program that provides one annual award to a qualified and outstanding high school senior or a current college student at a two-year or four-year college. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be an international student or non-citizen enrolled in a US school. All applications must be filled out completely. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications are judged on merit and financial need. One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded each Fall.
2015 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
The recipient of the 2015 NextGen Scholarship was Carisse Lansiquot. Carisse, a junior at Morgan State University, thoroughly impressed the scholarship panel with her academic merit, leadership qualities, and community service. Carisse’s family is from Saint Lucia, and she credited her work ethic to her mother who frequently tells her “that hard work accompanied by faith…pays off.” She is a Chemistry major with a 4.0 GPA. She serves as an Alumni Director of the Delta Gamma chapter of the Tau Sigma Honor Society. She is also a music lover who plays the steel drum and has won two Panorama competitions. Among other things, Carisse is a role model to all young women who are and who wish to pursue STEM degrees.
